Every. Freaking. Day.

Somewhere I heard (or read) a suggestion to start your day listing three things that you are grateful for (or was it things that make you happy? or things that are positive?) and as you continually do this, you eventually change your outlook on life and become a more optimistic person who starts to approach things with more enthusiastic vigor, high spirits, and strong courage.

Approaching things with more optimism is something that I’ve wanted to work on for some time. Despite often projecting a cheery attitude, I must admit that my inner monologue is more-often-than-not one that sounds pessimistic and doubtful. As if I almost expect for things to go awry. So, year 2014, I am hoping that you will help me change this about myself. Going forward, with everything that I do, I would like to come in with an attitude that things will work out for the better and the thing to focus on isn’t what could go wrong, but what could go right.

Thus, my positive project.

Everyday in the year 2014, my goal is to set aside some time to write about my daily thoughts and end the post with three good things from the day.

Every. Freaking. Day.

It does not matter if these three things seem “insignificant” (mundane, trivial, small, etc.) either. That seems to be part of the point: to enjoy all the things in life, the great and the small.

This is definitely going to be a challenge, as it will require more time and more effort than the daily challenges I gave myself in 2012 and in 2013. But I think this will be a good exercise for me and hopefully a year from now, I can say that I accomplished this. And ultimately, in a year, I hope to become a brighter person in spirit.

Along the way, I’ll try to incorporate the other goals I’ve set for myself in 2014:

To do more hand-letterings
To illustrate more
To take more selfies (that’s for you, Caleb!)
To try new things (I’m aiming for at least 100 new things within this year)

These things will make their appearances within this blog.

I hope to keep myself accountable for this, but I hope anyone who decides to read this and follow along on this crazy journey will help encourage me to keep it up. Bad days will inevitably come, and on those days, I’m sure encouragement will be needed. Please be a part of this project! And if you are feeling up for it, please participate with me! 365 days to focus on the good, the positive, the bright side. Let’s do this, people!

Three things to kick this party off!
1. That empowering feeling that happens when a new year rolls around. It’s a brand new slate, whatcha gonna do with it?! I love the idea of possibilities.
2. Sleeping in. MY GOD, I love that January 1st often means having the chance to sleep in as long as you can. I woke up today at 10:30 am.
3. My sleepy beagle, Bella. I’m typing this in bed (still in my pajamas, and it’s nearly noon) and my dog is curled up and pressed against my leg. Quietly snoring. It’s so nice to have a dog for a companion.
